In a lot of cases when working with demo applications, the development of those, need data that relates to the real world as much as possible. With geo capabilities getting more and more important for use cases out there, geo data is one of the things getting more attention.

This ‘bite sized’ post will give you a nice resource of getting well structured geo data with an application that can be downloaded at the end of this post.

The app consists of two pages:

  1. A geographical overview of the world based on geo data found at
  2. A page for exporting the data you are interested in for your own projects

A screenshot of the geographical overview:

In this view you can see that the data holds records for 252 countries, with 383,125 cities summing up a total population of 2,956,739,527 people. I guess that the data for all people on earth can’t be served, maybe one of the reasons can be that not all people live in registered locations or collection of the rest of the data is a really difficult process.

But that doesn’t keep us from using a valuable resource as this one. As time progresses, hurdles like those hopefully will be solved.

The page for exporting your data:

When you selected some data on the first page, all you have to do is to right click on this table to export your results. From there you’ll know what to do with it.

Have fun! And see you next post!

The app with all this data can be found at Geography.qvf

App creation was done with Qlik Sense November 2018 release. So for best results using it yourself, consider upgrading.
